The difference is of course in the choice of materials, level of detail and processing, but also in the options available. Different materials have different prices. This applies, for example, to sliding door fronts and interior design solutions,” says Nina Bakke, Sales Consultant at Garderobemekka.

– When it comes to sliding doors, you can divide them both vertically and horizontally with continuous glazing bars, and you can choose different materials in the various panels – this costs a little more. If you only want to break up a surface, you can choose glued-on glazing bars as a cheaper alternative.

1) Plan the doors before you start thinking about interior design

2) Take measurements of the wardrobe

Start by measuring the height, width and depth of the place where the wardrobe will be installed so you know what is possible. 3) Design the doors for the room

If the room is low and wide, you can trick the eye with vertical bars that give the illusion of a higher room. Narrower vertical panels give a softer impression.

4) Add a little extra in the sliding doors in the hallway

Let the room determine the proportions

In this style, you can combine the black aluminum profiles with clear, sooty or bronze-colored mirrors. If you don’t want a mirror, white tempered glass is a stylish alternative, for example in a bedroom where you want to avoid reflecting too much light. When it comes to dividing the panels, Solveig has clear advice.

“It’s best to let the room determine the proportions of the sliding doors. For example, if the room is lower and wider than what you have in your inspiration picture, the expression will not be the same. Get in touch with us for a drawing lesson, either in-store or digitally,” recommends Solveig.

This is because the height and width of the room are crucial to the size of the panes, and thus to the expression of the glass wall. With the right measurements in the drawing programs, you can see what it will actually look like in your room. If the ceiling height is low, you can also deceive the eye by dividing the room with vertical glazing bars and stretching the ceiling height visually. Short-run sliding doors – a sustainable choice

Why has Garderobemekka chosen to produce in Norway?

“There are many good reasons for this, which benefit both our customers and us. The environmental aspect is one of the most important, as we avoid the emissions that result from long-distance transportation of finished goods from distant countries,” says Tor Arne Moss Westlund, Regional Manager for Southern Norway.

For customers, the benefits of local production are considerable. The delivery time is necessarily much shorter than with production abroad. “Normal production time here is 3-5 weeks. But we’re flexible, and have had several express deliveries in 1-2 weeks, for a surcharge. The record is 3-day delivery, when the customer was very satisfied,” smiles Romundstad.

A success story in the crisis year 2020

The story of Garderobemekka is not so long, but it is all the more intense. From the initial start-up decision to the opening of store number 4, it has taken almost exactly half a year. How on earth is that possible?

“95% of the reason we’ve achieved this is the unique human capital we have at our disposal,” says Magnus Bråten, General Manager of Garderobemekka. “The people are the most important thing – and the timing”

Unusually good timing

It may come as a surprise to some that 2020, the year of the pandemic, should be a good year to start a successful business. But for Garderobemekka, this year was the perfect time to start up. Because when the biggest player in the wardrobe market went under in April, a rare opportunity opened up. Demand for bespoke sliding door wardrobes was greater than supply, and skilled professionals were out of work. For Magnus Bråten, this was the moment he had been waiting for.

“I had been toying with the idea of my own wardrobe company for a while – I have 8 years of experience in the wardrobe industry already, and I knew the market was big. So for me, this was a golden moment. I had the premises, finances and expertise available, so I just had to go for it.”

Magnus Bråten was previously General Manager of Glassmester1, a chain of glaziers supplying everything from bespoke shower enclosures and mirrors to glass balustrades and window glass. In other words, he had a lot of expertise in glass, mirrors and aluminum. In addition, Glassmester1 had vacant premises in both Lørenskog and Bærum – and both available capital and willingness to invest. The fact that 2020 was also shaping up to be the big renovation year did not make it any less tempting to invest. Because when Norwegians can’t travel abroad, we renovate even more. In short: Everything was in place.

Establishment at speed

From the moment the decision to start up was made, things moved at a dizzying pace. 5. May, the company Garderobemekka AS was founded and on June 1, the website was ready. 6. June, the first employees were in place, and on June 18 the first store opened – in Lørenskog. 20. August saw the opening of the Bærum store, October 15 the Alnabru store, and November 12 the chain’s fourth store opened in Trondheim. 4 stores in 6 months – in the crisis year 2020. The CEO pays tribute to his dedicated employees, because without professionals with steel control, this would not have been possible.

“Everything would have taken much longer if we hadn’t had these people. They are the key to our success – because they have so much important experience and expertise. The staff are so flexible that it’s a delight. For a couple of months we were working at full speed 24 hours a day, and now we’re seeing the results,” says Magnus Bråten.

Because the numbers are already clear. The management had hoped for a turnover of 5 million by the end of the year, and now it looks like they’ll end up with double that. Demand has been enormous from day one, and production is running at full speed. There is little doubt that Garderobemekka has hit the nail on the head.

Norwegian-made quality

But what is it that sets Garderobemekka apart from the players that were already in the market?

“In short: We offer high-quality sliding door wardrobes in the colors and designs of your choice, and we promise customers the best price for the total package in terms of quality. We use reputable suppliers of high-quality parts, and we assemble them ourselves in our production facilities in Lørenskog. And with us, you get exactly the color you want,” says Bråten.

The chain’s high-end interior design series is now on the drawing board, a completely new and exclusive wardrobe interior with unique quality. The range will be launched in spring 2021, marking the start of a new chapter in the Garderobemekka adventure. What else will happen in 2021 remains to be seen. But the general manager is optimistic about the future.

“The company has got off to a flying start. Going forward, we’re going to work on achieving smooth and good operations, we’re going to reduce delivery times on our doors, and we’re going to develop more products. But who knows, maybe there will be even more stores in the coming year?” concludes Magnus Bråten.
